The following exercises are meant to help you reflect on some practical causes of unhappiness and how to avoid it.
Exercise 1: A healthy child called Ken, was born to a couple. Initially, they cared for Ken very well. As the couple ran into financial and personal problems, Ken was subjected to neglect, verbal and physical abuse by his parents. The parents eventually divorced. Ken was ultimately taken away by social services into care at age of 6. At 16, Ken had moved between 7 different care homes and carers. He had no contact with any of his parents. He had no siblings. He was disruptive at school and had no certificates by the time he left school at 17years. He could not hold any job. At 20 Ken had spent 6 months in Prison for stealing and 6 months in mental health institution for depression.
Question 1: Choose the most appropriate answers from the following. The depression (extreme unhappiness) of Ken is due to:

Exercise 2: It turned out that Ken had a genetic disease which he could pass to his children but avoidable if he carefully selects his wife. He knew this. As time went on, Ken was able to overcome his past. At 30 years, he met his wife, Linda who unknown to Ken, she was suffering from another genetic disease which can be transmitted to any child of hers. She had been depressed for a long time before she met Ken. Ken did not know this and he did not enquire. The first child, was badly formed due to the genetic diseases but alive. When the child reached 18, both parents began to suffer depression as a result of their ordeal. At 19 the child was also depressed.

Exercise 3. Sue had a knack for sporting opportunities. One day, she was to travel to Paris for a business meeting. Unknown to her, the flight had been cancelled due to bad weather. She nevertheless went to the airport but obviously, she could not travel to Paris. In the end she lost $1 million as a result , in cancelled contract. After a week, she was admitted to hospital for depression.

d) Blame the Airport authorities for the cancellation.

Exercise 4. 24 year old college student and part time worker, Lee had a girlfriend called Lisa. After 2 months, the relationship broke down. Lee got very upset and depressed but he was able to continue his work. After a week following the break-up, he met an old friend who introduced him to cannabis. He accepted to try it on his on volition. 3 months after the introduction, Lee lost his job and his flat as he could not keep up due to the drugs. His unhappiness just got deeper. His financial future was not under threat as he had inherited £4million from his late uncle. In the midst of this he met another drug addict who after a year had a child called Love for Lee. Neither parents wanted the child but had intentions to have unprotected sex.

Exercise 10. Peter, 38, father of 4 children had just lost his job due to a downturn in the economy. A week after (he had spent at home) without work, his wife and children noticed that Peter is no longer interested in watching his favourable programmes, he sleeps more than usual, he is eating poorly and has been neglecting himself. He has about Euro 10.000.00 in savings, which may last him for 4 months in support. Six months later, he got a job but not his desired job
